Northeast Woods Institute is a Maine-based outdoor education and wilderness learning organization opening in Spring 2027, created for those who want to learn, lead, explore, and become more capable in the outdoors. We bring together outdoor education, wilderness medicine and emergency preparedness, and guided expeditions to create hands-on learning experiences that connect practical knowledge with real-world application. Our programs are designed to help individuals and groups build skills, confidence, sound judgment, and a deeper understanding of the environments they move through.

Northeast Woods Institute is about more than learning skills.

We believe the wilderness can be a place to step away from the noise of everyday life, reconnect with the natural world, challenge yourself, and return feeling renewed. Time outdoors can create space to breathe, slow down, gain perspective, and experience the restorative power of being present in nature. From foundational outdoor skills and wilderness medicine to emergency preparedness, leadership development, and immersive expeditions, our programs are built around learning through experience. We believe the outdoors provides a powerful environment for developing practical skills while also cultivating resilience, responsibility, teamwork, confidence, curiosity, and connection.

We are building an institute where people can learn skills, develop leadership, explore the wilderness, and discover what they are capable of—while finding space to reconnect, recharge, and feel renewed.

Outdoor Education

Our outdoor education programs bring learning into the Northern Maine woods, waterways, mountains, and Northeast landscapes.

Through hands-on and experiential learning, participants can develop practical outdoor skills, navigation, wilderness awareness, nature knowledge, problem-solving, and confidence in the environments they explore.

Programs will be available for a variety of ages and experience levels and may include youth and family experiences, homeschool education, outdoor skills, workshops, and immersive learning opportunities.

Wilderness Medicine & Emergency Preparedness

When you're in the wilderness, preparation and sound judgment matter.

Our wilderness medicine and emergency preparedness programs provide practical, field-based education focused on prevention, preparedness, first aid, emergency response, and decision-making when traditional resources may be limited.

Training and certification opportunities will be developed and led by appropriately qualified professionals, including Wilderness First Responders, First Aid providers, Wilderness Medicine instructors, and Outdoor Educators.

Guided Expeditions

Our guided expeditions bring Education, Leadership, and Adventure together across the Northern Maine Woods, The Allagash, Northeast Waterways and Mountains.

Led by qualified guides and outdoor professionals, including Registered Maine Guides, our expeditions are designed to combine exploration with meaningful learning and real-world experience.

Whether traveling by foot or water, learning new skills, navigating the backcountry, or simply stepping away from everyday life, our expeditions offer opportunities to challenge yourself, build confidence, reconnect with nature, and experience the restorative side of the wilderness.

Coming Spring 2027

Something new is taking shape in the Northeast woods.

Northeast Woods Institute is being built with a vision to bring people outdoors to learn, lead, explore, and reconnect through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

As we prepare for our Spring 2027 opening, we are developing educational programs, wilderness medicine and emergency preparedness opportunities, guided expeditions, and immersive experiences throughout the Northern Maine Woods, The Allagash, Northeast Mountains & Waterways.

This is the beginning of something we hope will continue to grow—with new programs, new places to explore, and new opportunities to learn and experience the outdoors.
